The US Is the World's Most Punitive Nation, Right?
I think it's worth noting that a lot of countries around the world, even ones that we're unfavorably compared to, are just as if not more punitive on many interesting measures. So, you know, in the book, I give the example of Germany, which actually sentences a higher proportion of those convicted of first degree murder to life in prison than does the US. People are getting diverted for those sorts of crimes left and right in the United States. And if you just look at the data on violence and how concentrated it is, the US is unfortunately home to just many, many more pockets of serious concentrated violence.
