The Importance of Portraiture
The message these statues conveyed to their ancient audience was one of energy, motion and asymmetry. The more realistic representations of anatomy and mood are also emphasized by the first appearance of portraiture. Whether this may be genuinely deemed the arrival of what we would call true portraiture is debatable though. A Roman marble copy of a portrait of Themistocles dating to around 450 BC provides a compelling example of the genre.
