In 1829, a man named Solomon Chamberlain was chasing some rumors which led him to the Smith home in Palmyra, New York. The claimed provenance of the gold plates, coupled with the tone and the content of these first stories within the text,. it created a selection bias of early converts. Those materialists, the idolatrous folks reading the Book of Mormon, they viewed it as anything from Bible fan fiction to absolute heresy like Alexander Campbell did.
