The World Regret Survey is one of the largest databases of regrets ever. Unlike other negative emotions, regret requires agency; we can only regret stuff that we caused. We imagine making a different decision than we actually made and then negate that experience. The final cognitive superpower we engage in when feeling regret is called counterfactual thinking.
Regret sucks. Thinking back on things we should have done, or should never have done, can make us feel bad. But #noregrets isn't a philosophy for a happy and healthy life.
