Why Did Scandinavia Experience a Rapid Expansion?
The Norse population, as I described last time, was small and spread out. It did not grow dramatically in the Viking Age. And in fact, the demographic forces were quite the opposite. There was a tremendous demand for labor within Scandinavia,. Hence the market for slaves and the large number of captive people who were brought back into Scandinavia to do domestic and farm labor.
