The Tax on Life
Epictetus says hardships are not there just by accident. They're part of the tax on life, which is all your loved ones will die. If you want long life in immunity from ills, well, that's a womanish cry. So it's not just we got to pay our dues if we want to have pleasure. It's that there's actually something preferable about the struggle. But struggle that doesn't feel like a struggle.
