Jack Pershing's First Military Campaign
Jack Pershing was a rigid, disciplined instructor at West Point. When he leaves the Buffalo Soldiers to return to teaching in 1897, cadets call him Ninh-B-B-Jack. The nickname softens to blackjack and is soon embraced as a reflection of Jack's hard, unrelenting toughness. He meets Theodore Roosevelt while playing military tournament in New York City. They meet again soon thereafter in the Spanish-American War.
