The History of Mother's Day

Anne Jarvis started Mother's Day in 1913. She pushed state governments and the federal government for recognition of the holiday. In 1914, Congress officially passed a resolution requesting the president to declare Mother's Day an official holiday. By 1923, she ended up denouncing Mother's Day because of how commercial it had become. It's estimated that $28 billion will be spent on Mother's day in 2021.
