Pre-constantinian Christianity has esoteric and exoteric practices because of socially contextual reasons. For example, in catechism you are actually saved if you're going to go to hell. It's because pre-constant time when it was extremely dangerous to be a Christian. So this tradition has been there, it's just been very much muddied throughout time in a way.
