Gabapentinoids and Post-Op Pain

The study looked at the association between naloxone administration which was used as a surrogate for post-operative overstidation or respiratory depression and Gabapentinoid use. Over 110,000 patients underwent general anesthesia and were subsequently admitted to standard post-op wards. A total of 128 patients were given nalox one within 48 hours, 51% within the first 12 hours and 80% by the first 24 hours. Most interestingly, continuation of chronic Gabapentinoids into the post-op period was associated with an odds ratio of 6.3 so it's more than a 6 fold increased risk of nalOXone administration.
