Is There a Fundamental Difference Between Organisms and Machines?

The reason why organisms are interest-ly-purposive has to do with a peculiar thermodynamic character, the fact that they exist far from equilibrium. That is a very different state of affairs from the situation you find in machines where there are near equilibrium conditions. And so what I do in this, in that paper where I, where this is the chapter in the book, where I present this argument is tease out the implications. What does it mean? What are the implications of us accepting that there is this fundamental difference, thermodynamically speaking, between organisms and machines?
