The Details of the Schrodinger Equation
Erwin Schrodinger came up with an equation for how these orbitals, electron wave functions, actually behave. In words, any one wave can be decomposed into different energy parts. And every energy part evolves at a separate rate. So the energy of the wave is proportional to how fast it evolves. That's the entire thing. It's one of the fundamental rules of nature. We know that now electrons are not particles, they're waves. This is what you want in a good physical theory and understanding of what nature is and which equation it obeys.
