The Beauty of Yeast

In the 1970s and 1980s, scientists at UCLA were trying to understand aging by starving bacteria in a lab. They found that this was not working; so they turned their attention to yeast instead. After years of looking for genes which control lifespan, they discovered something called transposome mutagenesis. Transposome mutagens can be used to mutate about 6,000 Yeas' genes. The technique is now being developed into an anti-ageing drug known as Yercine.
