Paul is saying there's a work that God needs to do inside of you, but often I want to bypass the inner work of the Holy Spirit and get right to the external reward. But we are not promised our preferred more. If you place your faith in Jesus, God will do whatever it takes to create more and more Christ-likeness in your heart. He will do more and more to conform you to the image of Christ.
