The Power of Elites
The French elites wouldn't be the first nation leaders to bring in a new population and then find themselves actually lost that deal. The same thing happened with the Romans. We'll just bring in this one group to fight this other group and shore up our borders and actually now that group runs the show. Just remember that there are precedents for this kind of stuff and this is not particularly unique. It's interesting when you look at the wider context of the European Union because France is a country which would have itself become a rival castle to what they would see as the Anglo-American alliance.
