The Modern Music Industry Is a Mess

The modern day music industry is a bit of a mess to be quite honest it's very lopsided towards like the top few percent so the model has changed but if you take a look at one of the older bands that I worked with which is Sonic Youth they were a downtown underground noise band. It set them up to get a major label deal and have autonomy within that deal to then make records that were more commercially accepted. La Tigra found the great balance of like holding on to their integrity but not starving which business is more ruthless music or academia.
