The Role of the TRN in Sleep
In humans, the whole brain is active during sleep. In migratory birds on long flights, they can keep one eye open and one hemisphere awake. The thalamic reticular nucleus or TRN is a gatekeeper of sorts. It lets in only what's relevant and suppresses information that's going to be distracting.
