Gates was born at the start of the computer age and coded his first software by 13. He is now considered one of the pioneers of the microcomputer revolution, in the 70s and 80s. Later in his career and since leaving day-to-day operations at Microsoft in 2008, Gates has pursued many philanthropic endeavors. He has given sizable amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This is now reported to be the world’s largest private charity. In 2009, Gates and Warren Buffett founded The Giving Pledge. They and other billionaires pledge to give at least half of their wealth to philanthropy.
How to Avoid a Climate Disaster is a book that investigates the technology required to avoid a future climate disaster. Bill Gates believes this challenge is greater than the innovation required for men to land on the moon and get a computer in every person’s house. Bill Gates acknowledges that avoiding a climate disaster is a difficult task, as achieving net-zero emissions is almost impossible even at an individual level. He cites several everyday behaviors that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, such as using plastic toothbrushes, eating meat, and wearing clothes made of cotton or polyester. The problem will become more severe as the world's population grows, making it harder to implement changes in energy production and consumption. While transitioning to renewable energy sources will generate greenhouse gases in the short term, global action is needed to accelerate the development of technological solutions.
