Is John Piper Innovating the Reception of This Text?

John Piper's sermons on John for are harsh in their rhetoric. They're also pretty typical and clearly quite influential interpretations of this passage within North American evangelicalism. Is his view more or less an extension of what we see in say, Tertullian? And it's only really shocking because it's so out of step with the majority culture now.
