The Cost of Living Crisis in 1953

The majority of adults in the UK in 1953 did not have a bank account and indeed it wasn't actually legal to pay manual workers in anything other than cash until 1960. In 1953 pounds the average male wage was just over 9 pounds and the average female wage unfortunately quite considerably less than that at about 5 pounds 50. And I think I read that they were working 45 hours for that 9 pounds the men. The first credit card that was what 1966 did people use checks then though? Yes but most people didn't have bank accounts you tend to be sort of a bit better off if you had a bank account so you'd then have a checkbook.
