For over 600 years the Ottoman Empire ruled swathes of the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe. At its height, its sphere of control almost encircled the entire Mediterranean Sea. Despite humble origins, the Ottomans saw themselves as the rightful inheritors of the Roman Empire. They were in many ways modern, secular, multicultural and tolerant far before Western European countries adopted similar values. But what was their impact on the course of global history? And what legacy did they leave behind?
