Rabbinical Judaism and the Canon

Rabbinic judaism had uniformity among rabbinic jews. But why was it there? And the assumption jonathan is making as well, that the canon was closed prior to the time of christ. When we actually go back to those sources from the time period, that's not what we see at all. i don't think modern protestants would be comfortable with people saying, maybe hebrews is scripture, maybe it's not.
