The Shock of Non-Computability
The idea that there could be problems that were fundamentally non-computable was a shock. I started out with the PhD in neural networks with the intention of building a thinking, living, proving conscious machine. And then over that period of doing that PhD my position changed 180 degrees. So after meeting Roger Penrose the next big thing was listening to two philosophers arguing about prok which blew my mind having been brought up in cybernetics. The Chinese room argument resonated with me at the time and hearing Denner poo poo this at the time in his own unique way. This kind of links into the notions of panpsychism and how you end up concluding that anything can understand things
