The Post Office Was the Most Important Institution in the United States
Women in particular have done well during the wars. During a war, all the men are away fighting, and the post office needs somebody to handle the mail. In 18 89, john wana maker was named postmaster general. He was none the less critical of the industrial robber barons who had amassed their vast fortunes through monopolies in the post office. Fred gallagher says, John wana maker saw a way the government could help level the playing field for everyday americans.
