Biological Contagion Causes Social Unrest, Symbolically and Causally

Biological contagion can readily cause social unrest from the macro to the micro. Think back to the black death of 1348, which brewed the foundations for the peasant revolt of 1381. In pagan mind, these two concepts are intimately linked, symbolically and causally. It is not just in Sophocles, but many, many cultures who associate plague, natural calamity, and contagion with social calamity.
