The Effects of Mechanical Ventilation on Weaning
The study wean safe focused on invasive mechanical ventilation used when a patient cannot breathe for themselves to illness, injury or after surgery. An airway is put in place usually a tube that goes in the mouth and down the windpipe which is attached to the ventilator. Breathing is then assisted by the machine either completely or partially. The process can take anywhere from less than 24 hours to several weeks with some patients not able to be weaned at all.
