Is Consciousness in the Human Brain?
Do we know what the minimal physiological requirements for consciousness are? Certainly consciousness is not generated in any single area. There's no seat of the soul, whether it's the pineal gland that descart identified or anywhere else. Some people argue that a very basic form of consciousness can emerge just from the brain stem and doesn't require any cortex at all. But to conflate consciousness and intelligence, i think, is to underestimate what consciousness really is about.
