The crown was sort of constant, constantly in a struggle all through the middle ages. They often controlled the ability to do things like nelate, whichis create those battlements with a sort of zigzag pattern along the tops of a castle or fortified town. And they had repeated clashes with the churcha not only over taxation and land and money, but also over symbolic power and over spiritual authority.
