The Evolution of Genre in Management Journals
In the 80s and 90s, IBM was trying to develop a new AI language called Common Lisp. The Defense Department had supported a lot of projects using Lisp at a lot of different locations. But it became increasingly incompatible so you couldn't port things from one computer to another. They had different kinds of Lisp in them. So they decided to negotiate a common Lisp because we're not going to fund any more projects using Lisp. It got published in the Academy of Management Reviews. And what came out of that is that genre bumped up into the center of it.
