There's a pocket of iron-rich cenomanian limestone in this region here, and iron-rich stone often has a red hue. The reason why they did this is because when the waters are stirred, they believe that an angel touches the waters and a first person gets in, is healed. It fits with what Josephus alludes to. And so it's a way of really getting at, not what we would call canon scripture, but a verse that actually is a kind of early commentary on John 5.
