Phantom energy is like the same energy, but somehow it gets kicked up a level or something. The theoretical underpinnings of phantom energy are pretty fussy. They require a bunch of really weird fields that have strange things like negative kinetic energy. It's possible for them to exist in the universe and sort of wake up only in late times.
