The Ordeal of the Cross

The ordeal of the cross was outlawed in 819 after concerns were raised that it might be inadvertently mocking Jesus. A priest would take two sticks and carve a cross upon one of them, then pray to God for his help determining the truth. If it had a cross on it, the accused was innocent; if it didn't, he wasn't. The entire process, from start to finish, was totally under his sway.
