Stoicism is an idea of training our desires and inversions like I know last time we spoke you talk about anger being the royal road to self-improvement which I love that idea. In my own experience and observation it's like a close cousin almost to anger sometimes can be these desires and inversion whether it’s like a desire to maintain your reputation as you were talking about or a desire to know. These little things are tricky to even spot and become aware of. It reminds me of the Buddhist concept of non-attachment like Nishi if I remember rightly admired the Buddhists because he thought he thought there were one of the few philosophies that made the problem of desire
