In a country like Russia you had these elements of feudalism combined and with the development of very advanced capitalism. The workers needed to take power in supported by the peasantry, Trotsky was quite clear about that. With the help of the West works in the West they could then overcome the backwardness of Russia with the revolution and the workers in the West. Lenin came to it in a slightly different way but nonetheless arrived to it the same conclusion.
