Why Would the Nine Not Return?

The nine refused to return because they felt owed by God. I put myself in the seat of the nine and came up with a few reasons why maybe I would struggle to return. Gratitude kick started his journey even to a relationship with God? Was gratitude? It was a simple thing of saying I will choose to be grateful. So knowing the power of gratitude, why in the world would the nine not return?
