What if the Whitten Had Never Chosen Harold Hardrata?
What if the whitten had chosen to recognize william's claim? Or what if harold had not contested it? Would there then have been a peaceful transferl of the throne to william, and hence no massive loss of english power at hastings? If there had been no battle of hastings, then the english nobility would not have been decimated. There might have been more of a negotiated settlement and much less social and political change that came with the norman conquest. On the other side, maybe there would have been then more continuing feuding over the throne. And maybe the practice of primogeniture never would have been brought into england with william, the conqueror
