CHAPTER

Using Computational Modeling to Measure Performance and Metacognition

The most useful aspect of computational modeling is that people say, like, all models are wrong, but some are useful. So those models can help you to design experiments and basically to test the models and iterate in that way. And so one way we've been studying that as well as looking at patients with patterns of brain damage is also just looking at individual differences. We do see that when we match performance across different individuals, we can see fluctuations in confidence that are not explained by changes in performance. Those kinds of dissociations lend support to second order accounts.
