Mecca Was an Important Pilgrimage Site
Most of the peoples in arabia were polytheistic. Mecca was already a significant pilgrimage site. The most powerful and wealthiest clan that basically dominated the town of mecca, the kurash or, i should say, tribe, thekurash. They were merchant traders, and they were also managers of the pilgrimage to mecca.
