The Taino People on Hispaniola
Artwey was a Taino chief on the island of Hispaniola. In 1511, Spanish conquistador Veláfquez set sail to invade Cuba. But Artwey warned his fellow chiefs that they would be enslaved. He stayed in Cuba and launched a guerrilla war against the Spanish. The story is recorded by Bartolome de la Casas, an early settler. Despite initially participating in the enslavement of the local population, he has a change of heart in 1515 and becomes an outspoken opponent of the system of Encomienda.
