How Did People Explode the Sugar Industry?
The Venetians have some plantations of some kind on some of their islands. But a lot of the work was actually done by Portuguese colonists. Nasty bits were no doubt predominantly done by slaves, but in fact it takes time for something like sugar production to become slave-based. It takes time for the slaves to become the only Labour force in use. The whole system eventually comes to the pen more than that.
