The Importance of Openness in Economics
The French kingdom was functionally broke. Its economic system was heavily regulated and lacked flexibility. France operated within the guild system, which had separate and distinct categories of businesses to make sure people didn't get too adventurous with what they sold. In a regimented guild system, you couldn't even combine existing businesses. Let alone start a new type of business. You could name it the buzz and fuzz.
