The history of people's private lives is very complicated. As long as the written form has existed, people have been writing each other declarations of love. The middle ages was when the formal development of ours, Dick Tamines, which is the art of letter writing developed. In this time period we get Shakespeare, the famous love letter writer and Shakespeare obviously has a lot of love sonnets but in as you like it one of his plays the character Orlando has been writing poems to his beloved Roseland.
