The Crisis of Liberalism and the Rise of Experts
I think in a certain sense, they are the same crisis, although we don't always think of them that way. There's always been a tension between the few and the many in political philosophy and in political organizations. I think what happens with the rise in the late 19th century of this kind of scientific technical elite is a peculiarly modern form of that problem. And so I think grappling with that problem is one of the most important things that we can do.
