The Deathbed Narratives of Soseki

Soseki's poetry is a response to the decline of the literati tradition. He uses his own body as sort of a metaphor for the decline of that tradition, he says. Soseki: Shiki was suffered from tuberculosis, but he creates this poetic persona that is also ill and dying. And while he's crying, I think the reader, or maybe I'm just talking about myself in my sixth sense of humor, but I find myself kind of, like smiling and laughing at the same time.
