John Brown's Raid to Free Slavery
On October 17th, John Brown and his son launched an assault on Harper's Ferry to free slaves. The first casualty of the raid is a black baggage handler named Shepard Hayward who was shot in the back below the heart. At 10 am local militia force John's men to fall back, taking the bridges and the armory. President Buchanan calls up 90 Marines to go quell this rebellion,. Their commander is one of the best in the US military, a guy we met back in the Mexican-American war.
