When I was around 14, my dad sat me down and he said, listen, I don't have any money for you or your education. So I applied for a lot of scholarships. And when I graduated from the University of Michigan, I had only $10,000 of student loan debt remaining. He also worked as a research assistant and a lab and studied sickle self before going on to medical school at Northwestern. That's when I started to learn about finances.
