The Cost of Magic in Dune
I think what you hit on there is make your cost personal to the character. Meaning if you can have some sort of cost, it doesn't always have to be. On the surface, Dune looks like medieval feudalism writ large across the galaxy. As you start looking at these different guilds and what you do, you realize Herbert really thought about the donkey. He broke his world. And he reshaped it around these various abilities. What you end up with is something that's almost incomprehensible compared to the world we live in.
