Major John Mitchell of the 339th fighter squadron was selected to lead the mission. His flight would consist of 18 aircrafts. Four pilots would attack the Betty bombers only, and after they were down, engage whatever fighter aircraft were in their field of vision. It was thought that if Yamamoto flew the prescribed route at the prescribed speed, he would be at this spot at 0 9 35.
