What Are Messes in Deserts?
A messa is an isolated flat topped like a ridge or a hill that's often found in deserts, and then is bounded on all sides by fairly steep cliffs. Messes typically form when there is overlying relatively resistant layers of hard rock on the top of them,. That sits on top of relatively softer, more easily eroded, often sedimentary rock. I believe the reason why they're particularly associated with deserts is just because you don't typically see the exposed of the cliffs in other environments.
