It wasn't until 19 60 until every household could self report their racio identity. For the majority of this country's history, race data was really determined by government workers looking at someone and judging, oh, i guess you look white. We have to remember there was a new new writing areas to allow people to give more detail about their racial and ethic identities on the 20 20 census forms. And all these changes the census bureauses produced a more thorough portrait.
